They are also environmentally safe and contain no mercury unlike CFL's. LED's are very focused and directional so a lens is required to diffuse their light output. HID lights are powerful with a clean white light very close in spectrum to sunlight. They are most commonly used as a replacement for halogen lights or older fluorescent lighting in areas such as gyms, parking lots, factories, or warehouses. HID lights are much brighter than halogen lights, use less power, and last several times longer. Common configurations include metal halide, mercury vapor, high pressure sodium, and low pressure sodium.
