Soffit Lighting Installation
Soffits are portions of your ceiling that are dropped down, usually along the perimeter of the walls. They are both aesthetic and functional. They break up the boxy look of a rectangular room and give it character and interest with the varying heights. At the same time, they provide a great location for additional lighting in the room.
The two primary types of lighting associated with soffits are recessed can lights or rope lighting. Recessed lighting was first used in the 1950's and 60's where contemporary style with clean lines was the rage. The lights mount flush with the ceiling with only a trim ring visible around the light itself. These lights can be used to provide the majority of illumination in a room and paired with a chandelier or other fixture for dramatic effect.
Rope lighting is often used as a secondary source of light to achieve a certain look or "mood." It is relatively inexpensive and available in several stock lengths. For custom applications, longer runs can be linked together or shorter runs cut. This indirect lighting can be used in conjunction with the recessed lighting and other fixtures to create the perfect atmosphere in your kitchen.
If your room has 8 foot ceilings or greater you have the perfect blank canvas for installing soffits if you don't already have them. A minimum height of 8 inches and a depth of 28 inches is recommended when constructing soffits. The 8 inch height will allow for the use of recessed can lights and the 28 inch depth brings the lights out from the wall far enough to be effective.
